The practice of Music-Thanatology at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene began in 1997. We call the service to patient and families "Strings of Compassion." The practice has grown over the years; now providing vigils for two hospital sites and a very large hospice service in homes and nursing homes. There are now three music-thanatologists at Sacred Heart and the practice has become fully integrated into the delivery of care. It is well utilized and appreciated.

I've had the opportunity to deepen my own experience of the music through teaching a three day workshop called "Timeless Presence Made Audible: An Introduction to Music-Thanatology." This was mainly working with spiritual healers already working with the dying and introducing them to the power of sounding. I have also been integrating harp and voice with a shakuhazi player extending the liminal qualities of Chant and learning from the potent Japanese tradition.

Judith is the founding director of Circle of Love, a not-for-profit providing music-thanatology services to northern New Mexico since 1995. She also contracts with Presbyterian Medical Services Hospice Center in Santa Fe to offer music vigils to their patients and families. Judith teaches the Alexander Technique and has an extensive background in professional theater. She is currently touring an original solo performance piece, "Sailing by Night," about her journey with music-thanatology.
